China Installs 200 GW of Solar in Single Year, Shattering Records
China installs 200 GW of solar in 10 months, exceeding its own 2024 annual record and pushing total capacity past 900 GW.
China Installs 200 GW of Solar in Single Year, Shattering Records
China's National Energy Administration confirmed on November 18, 2025 that solar photovoltaic installations reached 200 GW during the first 10 months of the year, surpassing the previous full-year record of 217 GW set in 2024 with two months still remaining. Total installed solar capacity in China now exceeds 900 GW.
The milestone means China installed more solar capacity in 10 months than the entire installed solar base of any other country except the United States.
Driving Factors
Panel prices fell to $0.09 per watt in China's domestic market, a 35% decline from the start of 2024. The price collapse, driven by massive manufacturing overcapacity, has made solar the cheapest source of new electricity generation in every Chinese province.
Provincial governments have accelerated approvals for large-scale desert solar installations in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Qinghai as part of the "Gobi Desert Bases" initiative, which targets 450 GW of combined solar and wind capacity.
Grid Absorption Challenges
Curtailment rates have risen to 5.8% nationally, meaning a growing share of solar output is wasted because the grid cannot absorb it. In Qinghai and Gansu provinces, curtailment exceeds 12%, prompting concerns about investment returns for developers.
"China's solar deployment is outpacing grid development by a factor of three," said Frank Haugwitz, director of Asia Europe Clean Energy Advisory. "Battery storage and ultra-high-voltage transmission are the critical bottlenecks."
Storage Response
To address curtailment, China installed 45 GW of battery storage in the same period, predominantly 2-4 hour lithium iron phosphate systems co-located with solar farms. The government has mandated that all new solar installations above 100 MW include at least 10% storage capacity.
Pumped hydro storage projects totaling 120 GW are under construction nationwide, though most will not come online until 2027-2028.
Global Market Impact
China's manufacturing dominance — producing 80% of the world's solar panels — has created trade tensions with the US and EU, both of which have imposed tariffs on Chinese solar imports. However, the sheer volume of deployment continues to drive down global costs, benefiting developing nations seeking affordable clean energy.
Industry projections suggest China could reach 1,200 GW of total solar capacity by the end of 2026, generating enough electricity to meet approximately 15% of the country's total demand.
